Trick-Or-Treat! A blog hoppin good time!

Is it a Trick or a Treat? How about both!
Thank you for blog hopping through our neighborhoods full of tricks and treats. Come see what we have in store for you through October 31st. There are lots of goodies along the way so be sure to get my tricks and treats and hop on to the next blog for more. Link will be provided at the bottom of this page.

Who’s ready for a Social Studies and Language Arts lesson, all wrapped up into one little bundle? I thought you might be! Well, here’s a nifty little trick for you when it comes to incorporating Social Studies and Language Arts into one big lesson.

I’ve always had a tough time trying to squeeze ALL of my Socials Studies standards into the nine weeks that are already jam packed with other standards.  How do you choose? What do you teach in depth and what do you just cover?
Well, this year I decided to cover it all. Yes… all! I hope! J
I carefully looked at where and how I could incorporate Social Studies into my LA and writing block. My goal was to cover as many standards as I could without over doing it.  I spent many nights trying to come up with something that would teach my students what they needed to learn and how to keep them engaged. With a little insight from a sweet team member, I came up with, Biography Lap Books, based off of the “Who Was” book series.
These are just fact-based printables that can be used with the “Who Was” books or just about any resource. But, have you read any of these Biography books? Sad to say, I just started this year and now I’m hooked. My kiddos love them too!
We started off with Milton Hershey and during my conferences last week, more than 70% of my kids parents raved about how much their kids loved working on biographies and how they now want to travel to Hershey, PA. Well, if I have to be honest, I want to go there too.
Milton was a fascinating and very giving man. I learned so much while teaching my own students about him. We had a blast learning, making connections, studying his timeline, discovering some interesting facts, and most importantly learning what a great entrepreneur and good citizen he was. We were able to write, read, study and have fabulous book walks while completing the lap books.

After we completed our lap books, the kids asked to read the books I had purchased on Milton Hershey and they wanted to know when they get to make another one. Well that got me thinking. Who was (get it, Who Was. haha) our next historical figure and what could we do to make him just as interesting. And so it began, Who Was Biography book studies and lap books are part of our Social Studies and Language Arts block and I couldn’t be happier! I even put them into a center and let the kiddos work on them independently. They love it! How would you like to win a copy of this Biograhy Lap book? It's an easy 1 step entry in my rafflecopter below. Good Luck!

Response to Literature with Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

Happy Last day of July friends!!

It’s that time when we’re all preparing for the back to school craze. I know, don’t talk about it yet but we have to face it sooner or later.
So, lets talk about Response to Literature (RTL). Something that is near and dear to my heart. I discovered a new in depth way to teach my kiddos how to really think about the text before responding to the questions asked. It seriously changed my life and my way of teaching.

RTL can be aligned to any text for most grade levels. With the included prompts, discussion questions and thinking maps in each unit, your students can respond to a simple question or go as far as writing an essay.
When responding students show they understand what they’re reading by making connections, retelling the plot, sharing background knowledge, experiences, using evidence they find in the texts and making comparisons.  This allows them to truly understand the text before responding.
I’ve created my first RTL based on a favorite story, “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.” or see it here

If you’d like an opportunity to see results for yourself, enter my Rafflecopter for a chance to win this engaging unit.

Fabulous TPT Conference 2015!

Las Vegas and TPT!!!
That was some serious energy. I was able to witness first hand what it's like to be part of a teaching world that's so much bigger than I could have ever imagined.
TPT has opened the doors for new growth on so many levels. I started out buying units from teachers on TPT and a few months ago I decided to jump in with both feet and see if I could create products others would love to use. It's a slow start that takes a lot of time and creativity. Crazy as it may sound, I love that part of it. What I love best is that I can make things for my own personal use and get the best feedback on each item. My kiddos are very opinionated helpful and that really motivates me to do a better job. I value their feedback and have full trust in them.
Now, about the conference.... The friends I've made from all over the world, the other creators I've followed for the past few years and the entire gang from TPT, made this trip so worth while (not losing money at the Wheel of Fortune slots~ ugh.. I'm fine, really). I left there with a new insight on how to move forward and reach my goals. I learned what to do and what not to do. I learned more about social media and how to go about using it correctly. But most importantly, after attending all of my workshops, I truly believe I am heading down the right path. That alone excites me!
I know there is a wealth of information out there on #tptvegas15, so I'll let you go for now. Thank you for stopping by and following my blog.
My promise to you is...... I will continue to grow, add more stories, post useful tidbits and of course, new products, so check back often.

#TPTconferencelasvegas2015

Hello from Las Vegas

I'm up a bit early since I'm still on Texas time. I came to this conference this year not knowing what to expect but I'm hoping for some amazing inspiration from a fabulous group of teachers. I wanted to blog today before my first conference begins and blog again after I'm home. I believe I'll have so much powerful information that I'll be on overload for a while.
I got to meet some amazing bloggers and friends I've made along the way. (The Chocolate teacher and Wild West by Jessi, to name a few). The energy in this hotel is one of a kind. One I'm happy to be a part of. Teachers truly are amazing!
I have 2 days of sessions that I'm so looking forward to and I love most that I am here by choice. I hope to gain some new techniques and find many helpful tidbits to help grow my mind, my class and my TPT store. Come back and check out my post-post of #TPTconferencelasvegas2015 in a few days and see what I have to share!!!

Dare to Dream ~ #TPTSellerChallenge ~ week 2

Dreams~

Although I have many, I focused on a few that I hope to gain with my hard work as a TPT designer. My Journey started a couple of months ago and I know it can only get better from here.

Grow my TPT store ~ This is a huge challenge. One that I have come to know all to well. I know what I need to teach, but what about all of you and your needs. What's going to make my product stand out? What's going to catch your attention? What can I do to keep you coming back for more? As you can see, I think about this and everything else before I even start something new. It does take a lot of time and hard work but I'm up for it! I can't wait to reflect on the post in a year from now and see the growth. Hang in there with me followers, it only gets better!

Travel ~ Oh, such sweet words! I feel fortunate enough to have traveled to the places I've been. However, I want more!! I will travel, not just dream of it but actually do it! I want to see the world. Until now I've only wanted fun in the sun. Now, I want to see more of what's out there. Europe is on next year's list! Not sure where but hoping coastal. Yes, I'm still a beach girl at heart!
Secondly, I hope to have enough money to have a small place near the beach that's only a couple of hours from my home. That's a dream I hope comes true.

Student Loans ~ Yes, my dream, as many others, is to get those darn things paid off! Nuff~ said!!

Have a happy Sunday all!

~Time Freebie~

So, last week I took part in a huge #TPTChallenge and gave a face-lift to my Time Unit. Lemonade Time Scoot is a fun and exciting learning tool to use in the classroom. It's good for grades 1-2.
Telling time to the hour and half hour can be a challenge at this young age so why not use a scoot game to reinforce what they have already learned. My kids love scoot games and it gets them up and moving around the room. Follow the link to my store and get your free copy today.
Enjoy and keep an eye out for upcoming freebies from Mrs. Humphries Class.

Cheers,

Makeover Madness

Wow!! It's been a year and so much has changed. I'd like to start off with my fabulous new face lift! On my freebie of course.
This is the very first product I created for TPT last year and I love it! I have continued to look at it over the last few months and knew it needed something to make it pop. Well, I hope this is it. I'd love some feedback and if you're interested in a copy, you can head over to my TPT store and download it for free.

Happy summer all!!!
